My Son Can Never Be Unhappy!

Some parenting methods today advocate that it is cruel and unloving for a mom to ever allow her baby to cry for even a minute. I believe this method is harmful to moms, to marriages, and to our children. In my view, it sets up unrealistic expectations and goals that can lead to a mom idolizing her child’s happiness. It can also lead to total exhaustion and nervous breakdowns for new moms.

I can certainly have goals of always seeking to meet my baby’s needs to the best of my ability and to be responsible and a godly mother for him. But if my goal in being a successful mother is that my son may never cry or ever be upset, my son and I are both going to be miserable. It is not possible, nor is it healthy, for me to attempt to create a life that is completely free of any momentary discomfort for my child.

When my baby’s happiness is my greatest goal, and I can’t let him cry at all, I will be willing to sacrifice many things to this idol. I will sacrifice my sleep, my health, and all my time. I will sacrifice my marriage and my husband. I will sacrifice my time with God. I will probably resent my husband if he doesn’t have the same perspective. If he suggests putting the baby down safely in his infant seat for a few minutes so I can take a shower, I may believe he is not a good husband or dad for daring to suggest such a thing. I become a slave to my child’s contentment at every moment.
